Rather, I would stay he stands out among isekai protagonists because he doesn't really come off as a self-insert character. He's his own dude and goes at his own pace (a sort of hot-headed free-spirit, indeed like something out of a romanticized high-school gang manga, though perhaps a little bit softer in personality).
