I say it's because this isn't just a spin-off, but one with a "person travels back in time and tries to make everything better" plot. I'm always a huge sucker for those kinds of stories. Also it helps that the worldbuilding and events were already established in the main series, which allows the author to have a better grasp at what he's going to write next.
