Yondome wa Iya na Shizokusei Majutsushi - Vol. 4 Ch. 18 - Ghoul King

@Meridis
Oh, yeah, there was that. Although, Van still draws the line between undead and ghouls. Can't remember, were vampires even considered undead here?

@icantnotthink
Well, not sure, but i think it's only in D&D that it's explicitly stated that ghouls are undead. It's origins are in Muslim folklore and i dunno if it even has such a classification as undead (ghouls are said to be some kind of evil spirits or demon-like humanoids).

@Vincentius and @Tamerlane In universe it was somewhat explained that Van's death magic and the pre-existing life magic, are not really opposite or even mutually exclusive.

Life magic can restore a freshly deceased body (it cannot be dead for more than a little while) up to a point where the biological integrity is restored to a point, but the deceased would still be dead as a soulless body.

Using death magic to heal a corpse will again work up to a certain point, it can stop further body degradation and even some degradation can be reversed, but while it can bind a soul to the body, it can't on it's own restore life to the body nor can it restore the body(fixing body for undead requires surgery and/or stitches), leaving the bound soul and body as an undead.

In other words, life affect mostly the biology in some sense of the biology integrity in itself and cannot affect death, decay and degradation which falls under Death magic instead.

PS: Fully reviving someone is a whole complicated matter that get explored way later on.

Oooh! Pauvina appear~
The Live-Dead who is going to Van-chan half-noble orc sister finally arrive~

Here we have the real birth of
an emperor. Though he's quite far from the point of becoming
a demon king who devours souls and gods.
.

@Kidawesome55
That is
a corpse but temporarily has full biological functions due to life magic. The original owner having died, there is no soul and no will. It is being remotely controlled like a surveillance drone. The person controlling it did indeed want it to get caught.

Better question: What kind of self respecting ork keeps his hair in a bowl-cut?
