@wickerbottom Asian culture? Nope. We are currently have a trend where women marry men several years younger. And people need to follow the law. The law stated that 18 is the legal age for marriage. And according to Japanese law, anyone under 20 is a minor. The law permits sex between minors but when it was an adult and a minor, it is a violation of the law.

Even if the age of consent in Japan is 13, each Prefecture has local law that raises the age of consent higher. And there are provisions in the law that will allow the law enforcement to go after anyone that had sex with a minor. Article 34 of the Child Welfare Act forbid sex with anyone under 18. Unless you are a Japanese lawyer, you can't really know for sure.
The 13 age of consent in Japan only works when it is 2 minors. According to Japan Civil Code, anyone under 20 is a minor so if you are older than 20 and spent a night in the hotel with a 19 years old then the parents decided to press charge, you can still got arrested for kidnapping.

If 13 years old is truly the age of consent, then why did a manga author got arrested when he tried to have sex with a 16 years old girl?

in Violet Evergarden the guy who says he loves the 14 year old girl, does it when he knows they are both likely to die. There is never anything happening between them, and Violet herself wants to understand feelings, originally for her own sake (so she can understand what the guy meant) but also eventually for other people he meets. Now, I honestly didn't read the novel, but since the guy is dead, nothing says he couldn't have meant he loved her in a platonic way, for example. I also don't think It was labelled as a "one of the best story in all of anime" but lol. You do you.

I personally haven't read the book of Howl's moving castle either, but It is a pretty old story, written in a different setting and culture than a modern one. One should not take old works as an excuse to justify your mistakes in the present, but as a window at best of what was it like back then. In the movie I always thought Sophie was a young adult, or at least close to Howl's age (or mental age, considering Howl remains a teenager through and through).

There are a shitton of laws agaisnt adults dating minors, but this is a manga comment section not a kindergarten meant to educate you tbh. You can search for that yourself.

Also, don't use that lame excuse of "is culture". You are not going to like knowing most normal people in Japan aren't ok with l*li and sh*ta shit. Consider not using anime and manga (and illegal doujin scans) as your idea of what a "culture" is like. Read a book.
