Pochi's gendered pronouns could be a guess on the translator's part in either case we've seen so far I suppose. It wouldn't be that strange for the author to tiptoe around that particular issue if they're planning on doing something or other later on. Like, dog to human transformation at some point for a "You were female?" "You thought I was male?!" joke. Or even just that joke without a human form at all. Problem is it gets awkward to write sentences in English without ever using he/she, so we have a whole lot of sentences on a whole lot of pages on a whole lot of series on sites like this where there shouldn't really ever have been something like he or she in it at all.
