Yuukyuu no Gusha Asley no, Kenja no Susume - Vol. 4 Ch. 21

meh, when they started forcing him to join i thought..."dude just leave , what they gonna do , expel your friend and you ? two geniuses lost ?" , and its not like this is the only academy and only country where you could join, just tell them , you go to another country and they will do anything you wan to keep you there

frustrating seeing him letting others push their agenda on him

@ShinSekai
While I agree with you, at the same time, imagine that a 6 years old come up to you and acts all haughty, thinking that they cornered you. Playing along with them isn't necessarily a bad thing.
For the very least, I feel like that's the best way to look at the MC's decisions <_< otherwise he ends up as a passive potato, as you said. Kinda lowers the enjoyability factor.

honestly didnt really expect irene to cross that line into repugnant that fast.

literally everything up till now was silly/petty teasing and tug/pull, but she just straight up jumped into the same camp as a dude who exudes unpleasantness and blackmailed him using his friend as collateral...and for what? "to keep my science specimen close"?

leaves a bad taste.

still, MC's face and frustration throughout the final pages tells me he's gonna make them pay for it. that being said, i hope the story doesnt try to gloss over the fact that what irene did is usually reserved for villains.

A lot of edge lord kids here today. Why the hell would violence be your initial response? How insecure do you have to be to think that? He simply conceded because it's not worth the bother. Sure, he may be the most powerful mage around, but guess who isn't? Rina. He was fine with turning them down when it involved just himself, but he's also responsible for her too. Not to mention he's also the reason she'd be at risk. Thinking logically it's not a bad deal and also puts him in a better position to have more freedom and power within the school. The only downside being more work and being lightly monitored (which he already is by Irene any time he quests).
Plus, contrary to what others believe here there's still plenty of things he can learn from the academy, even if they're not all related to magic. The information and resources could go a long way in helping with future travels. Still, it wouldn't hurt if he was a bit more assertive and stood his ground more firmly. So far this school seems more like a crime syndicate than a place for learning.

I mean it's not like it's something serious that goes against Asley's ideology, it's just bothersome (to him). Sure they are coercing him to come to the council, but he did change the contract without having a word with the contract-giver. Now, if they push their luck any more, then he can just say bye bye.

@Happily_Grim
Exactly.

It's not like I wanted him to go full edgelord or something, I just wish he didnt let them literally walk all over him without even fighting back even a little. He just up and caved to the blackmail immediately.

Well this was lame, all he had to do was threaten to drop out and they couldn't do anything to him. It's like the author completely forgot what he did to his own contract.

Looking at the comments I see people are defending him agreeing to join them, I'll say this:
I'd only accept him joining if they gave him positive reinforcement for joining rather than immediately threatening him.

these humans are stressful af..

@NIsverah - yep.. i was thinking the same.. the contract is basically nothing.. if not.. it really put the opposing contracted in disadvantage..

he can just basically disappear from records without trace.. even their referral letter is fake.. nothing to trace back..

this chapter makes that 'contract tampering' really lackluster lame episode.. what is the use of tampered contract if you gonna get blackmail from it.. smh..

For all those people who are mad at him for caving in, it wasn’t just his spot at school on the line. I would expect he would want Rina to have some sort of school life seeing from what he has desplayed beforehand and it’s wants too taxing so of course he caved in.

just blow them up?!? why giving in if you are clearly stronger? Or just burn her contract or something like that. there has to be 100 better ways

I think one of the reasons people are so dissatisfied is we didn't get to see Asley's inner thoughts in this chapter. And naturally blackmail is a very serious matter and just taking it like that never feels good. It basically puts you in a powerless position and while, yes, this isn't just a streight up power fantasy I doubt many people would be reading this if MC had no actual power.
For me, this is a red flag because Irene has been a "semi-party member" until now and if she somehow keeps that status going forward, I don't think i can keep reading. Some lines shouldn't be crossed and for that was one such case.
Hopefully this gets resolved well.

Welp, what a whiplash
I just want to see Asley and Irene outplaying each other, not some blackmail scheming bullshit.
Guess edgelord can only drag everyone to edgy subplot with him. I mean, just compare his reaction to the tampering with Irene's reaction. Like night and day (heh)

I don't get why he is still insisting to visit that school. I know, that this was his long term goal, but 1st: It is obvious, that this isn't the same school anymore from 5000 Years ago. Too much knowledge has been lost. 2nd: The people in charge of it are dicks! Criminal, blackmailing dicks and a cunt. There is nothing to gain, nothing to prove anymore and the people are troublesome. He should have just lit up that contract of Rina and his own in front of them. (I know. It's a dickish move in itself to not ask her for her opinion on it, but there is no time. You have to show strength right away.) Then he should have teleported over to her, apologized and tell her the story. If she would be mad and wants to stay, I'm sure those bastards would let her.But I can't imagine that. She'll follow him and will return 10 years later to burn that school down.

In the end it's just like many here already said it. His value and that of Rina go through the roof. If they leave, it's the school's bitter loss, not theirs. "Hard" future ahead of Rina or not.

Also, after that blackmailing action of Irene, she's dead to me. I hope he will turn the blackmailing around very hard and will never again share any knowledge with her or at least with a veeeeeery good reason.
