He just got conned by that couple. Their story is probably that the ghost appears behind mob characters windows so they'd call the exorcist to get rid of them.
With the money they have a romantic night at an expensive hotel. The ghost feels used, but is scared of losing the exorcist if he protests. The exorcist hasn't got a clue of his lover's reservations.

But wait, he states that not everyone can become a protagonist, meaning that people usually live their lives like normal, but given that he is constantly put into flag situations and he keeps avoiding them while knowing what is happening, doesn't it mean that he is basically "Marked" and he just keeps avoiding the inevitable, as he is going out of his way to avoid the flags and not living a normal life of a Mob ?

Basically, MC is in denial of the fact that he is, well, a MC, as his life is far from normal of what a Mobs life is.
