Yeah, I'm going with Hero being innocent, and it being one of Hero's party members actually being evil.

Whether they have a grudge against Douglas or are just using him as a scapegoat while they sabotage the Hero is up for debate (of course, it could be both).

If it turns out that the ring was actually a setup by the one who cursed the MC to trick the hero into thinking the MC stole his ring then that isn't going to make any sense, unless we're dealing with the jigsaw killer here (where mere coincidences are just part of the plan ) I don't see why they would even risk having the MC's curse be broken.

If it is a third party working for the demons who knew the MC was cursed and wants to manipulate the MC into killing the hero that would still be a ridiculous plan.

It better just turn out that the ring is just 1 of a pair of rings from the Hero's parents and the one who cursed the girl legitimately lost the ring by mistake so the author could setup the scenario that the one who cursed the girl is involved with the death of his parents in some way.

Anyone else get the feeling maybe the Hero cursed the MC for less "evil" reasons? Like, he knew the group was about to do something super dangerous and wanted the MC to retire safely beforehand?

The little flashback with MC and Hero talking about Hero's parents makes me think the Hero doesn't want to lose someone else he cares about so he's playing the villain to get the MC out of harm's way.
