This is exactly how the attack is described in the WN... People either skimmed it or just don't remember. There was no giant laser. It's described as pencil thin and fired in large groups. There was only one person he deliberately tortured, the rest was just due to bad aim. Dunno why people think he was torturing everyone when he was only there to collect their souls and leave.
Honestly the WN spends more time describing how the spell works than what he's doing with it.

In case people are just flocking to the web novel chapter 69 about half way is what your looking for it explained some things and some stuff is exclusive to the light novel but it'll do. That being said every version has the same outcome alt this point it's not a spoiler to say it's an absolute blood bath.

@jimmyclear hopefully we'll get a few more pages of it slicing up the higher-ups (I don't really doubt that since there was a fun bit where the leader's trying to figure out what's going on all around) but it's definitely a step up from the rather disappointing grey-goo-scenario that just became a very small and unimpressive manga page.
