Maybe this was recently after they had suffered greatly from a monster invasion (they DO look a bit jaded); if my memory doesn't fail me, the "hero" had lost his loved ones to the demon army.

@TheCrises well, considering the hero was already tied to a curse on a child who just about bursts into tears at the thought of sharing what she went through, I am not sure how much darker he can be painted without adding a skull motif to his armor.

I wonder if they all have tragic backstories pertaining to monsters or something. That plus their young age might have made them extreme (at least in the beginning? the healer, at least, seems nicer now)
