@Glomoro Mostly due to not living together long enough and the questionable personhood status of sentient figurines. Common law marriages are accepted in many jurisdictions usually requiring years of cohabitation. Japan law seems to allow common law marriage to some extent and it is the only option for couples who want to keep separate surnames after marriage.
@knecht Yeah, I was pretty much disregarding the method of their marriage. It's pretty much the fact that she doesn't really have anything resembling human rights at the moment. You could put her on sale on some figurine trading site right now or something, and her apparent sentience wouldn't matter a bit.
Hm, now there's an idea. Put a sentient figure up for resale, ship her to the buyer... and then have her escape the house to meet up outside with you. Rinse, repeat.
