I camp exclusively in my home now, but there was a time where I'd whip out one of those Mora knives Gen has and make feather sticks out in the bush. This is a good primer on the tools and techniques one might employ on a prepared or chaperoned site today. Due to greater environmental restrictions (national forests, park preservation, wildlife endangerment, etc.), these kinds of camping sites tend to be the few left for most of us.
If you want that true solo experience nowadays, you might have to get yourself a hunting license and a tree stand. Oh, and a rifle or bow, of course... but it's up to you whether to take or simply observe.
