Korea was a United Nations operation, not a US one.
In 1948 South Korea became a UN member state. In 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea, and the Korean War commenced. The UN Security Council took action and recommended UN member states to provide assistance to South Korea in the Korean War. Resolution 84 established a unified command to coordinate the war effort of allies of South Korea in the Korean War.

I find it heavily ironic that they say don't repeat America's mistake and proceed to bomb the forest using the same planes as the US in Vietnam

@humbleoverlord: They did molest him. They messed with him good. The question is, why didn't they kill him? Maybe they wanted to have a central figure head within the enemy, that is capable of surrendering? But looking at that guy, yeah fat chance. Maybe they fear, that a more capable guy would replace him? Seeing how totally lost their case is and with the real emperor in the new capital, it stands to reason, that such a capable person would surrender, because it is the right thing to do. By killing him, they wouldn't even make him a hero, just the foolish son of the emperor, that messed with the wrong guys. Even if he makes a total fool out of himself from here on (even more, than he already did), his legend would still live on in the heads of idiots. Taking him out timely, might have actually prevented that the guerrilla tactics would have spread that much. And this could have been seen from the beginning. I just don't understand, how in wars nobody tries to take out the head of the enemy nation first. I would kill that person as a first, before more soldiers die, than needed. Soldiers are people, too. Must be the economy boom thing.

@Swerving we did a ton more damage by spraying the entire jungle with agent orange and giving even our soldiers along with the enemy a future cases of cancer.

If the mistake is in reference to America and Vietnam, it looks like the JSDF is making the exact same mistake that America made. The JSDF are starting another conflict and are creating/supporting a new government, that sounds like the basis to the Vietnam War to me. So I'm not actually sure what mistake is not meant to be made?

Really for America I think the mistake in entering the war in Vietnam was not having the commitment to actually win it, like bombing and invading North Vietnam. Jungles and mountains don't help either.

America has made mistakes regarding "collateral damage" in the past. 'Nam was the first time it became very public, but we've had additional incidents since then. Over in the Mideast hardly a week goes by without some news story of a Taliban/ISIS infiltrator rampaging inside a supposedly secure area. I'm not sure how Japan would be able to do any better in this story short of strip-searching every refugee.

@Omegacalgar In terms of bombs dropped, the US dropped more tonnage of bombs than those in WWII. I'd say the US's mistake was propping up an unpopular southern government rather a military one.

The mistake they're referring to is the part where America didn't thoroughly/not bothering to distinguish civs from collaborators/spies enough, not securing/holding an area with an undercover lookout after clearing them upon which they did in this series, and them bombing the forest on the last page simply meant they're very certain the place is full of enemy soldiers with no civs in the vicinity.
Don't forget the enemy here is still a conventional (medieval fantasy) army that relies on horse-drawn carts for supplies that does on the ground espionage without modern tech to assist them. The empire using certain types of magic and the JSDF deploying drones to counter said types of magic won't happen until later in the series which will probably take place more than a decade from now since the manga is a monthly issue (assuming there are no delays).
