Honestly I can understand how unhinged he was.
He's been a husk of a man spending the past ten years doing the bare minimum to stay alive. His wife was his only source of happiness, and the reincarnation situation is so surreal/unbelievable that he isn't acting realistically because it isn't realistic to him. Not to say he thinks he's in a fantasy, but his situation is so fantastical that he's acting fantastically.
I'm not saying what he did wasn't fucking stupid either, but he had a clear and developed reason for being stupid.
