@goodhunter i think the idea is very much based in reality, though. Their explanation that because food already tastes really good and there is a variety of ingredients that already exist, then there is no need to look for more variety. In the same way, because magic exists in that world then there is no need to invest into scientific advancement. In fact, it might be detrimental to the society. Magic can be used in every day life and in a variety of ways - from self defense to drying clothes - so there is no real need to look for other ways to get things done.

Most gods? Pretty much all gods a completely selfish pricks that give out quests with the implied or directly stated consequence of 'Fail and you die' which makes saying no impossible. Hell there's a real world myth where a water/river goddess got pregnant from sleeping with a human and rather then deal with it herself she just dropped it somewhere and told some DOVES to feed the child and keep it alive until someone adopted it. God's are assholes.
