No that doesn't sound right at all. Land is resources. Is the land they're taking completely barren? That's the only way I can see capturing territory as bad for the people. If that's the case it wouldn't be very impressive for the royal family either.

@ironclad only matters if you have enough people to exploit said resources, and if it's not obvious on the huge woods & long desolate roads, they don't have enough people to even exploit their current kingdom trying to police even more at that point is fairly pointless.

Like capturing the land now might be smart in a super far perspective, as a prep move for when they can actually use and abuse those resources but that would take a long time, and when you'll be dead before the investment pay dividends your not really that invested in it.

By playing too much Civ, ROTK, and stuff where a complete wipe is less of a hassle than starting an alliance/peace treaty, allowing the "enemy nation" to rebuild.

I hope that you were being ironic. Not long ago, with acquiescent populaces, the states of a bunch of developed nations joined to wage war on Libya, with a very predictable outcome. Still more recently, when the president of one developed nation was hesitant to be drawn into war in Syria, there was much popular hand-wring, and cheers when he ordered involvement; all this despite the ugly fact that the nation has been pulled into one war after another for about 18 years (including the Libyan fiasco), with none reaching a satisfactory conclusion.
