Sure he shouldnt have gotten involved with situations in general but consider the fact that he is an outcast with no one to talk to every day. She was the only one who showed him kindness. Obviously he came to see her in a better light. Unless you've experienced true loneliness then you wont understand how that feels. The few people who do talk to you, you consider invaluable. He was just defending her and wished for nothing bad to happen to the one person who talked to him.
