For a long time he didn't think about how much he needed Nana, due to how she was always there for him, but when she said she was leaving for overseas he was really distraught over it and realized he had to start being serious about things. Still, that's more and quicker character progress than for example Ippo's gone through. Can't believe it's been over 1200 chapters and he still hasn't made any real attempt to get together with... whatever her name is.

I never read the Ippo manga, but I can only compare this to Baki. In Baki, the love interest is literally only a tool to make MC stronger that gets scrapped after a while. And no one gave two shits because...well, the manga is basically Jojo's on crack.

She was overseas for the last 3 years, only visiting on occasion. I assume that's been a bit hard on him but like, no, they never broke up lol, in fact they barely even started officially going out in the original series.
