There isn't really a reason to go the whole 'shounen protag' route all of the sudden, given what we've seen so far. It isn't like he hides his enjoyment of fighting.

It's not like they couldn't have meant "tens of years." Because that is also a thing you could say, even if people usually don't. It's not strictly incorrect, at any rate, and depending on what the original said you might have reason to pick one over the other in translation.
