lmao at the people complaining about mc and lazy writing, the whole point of this manga is the language barrier between mc and the demon lord ffs. If mc understood or attempted to learn their language then this manga would've already ended or be renamed to "i was summoned by the demon lord" or something.

@Zblurth my understanding of the difference between young and old is instead of internalizing a different language and thinking of things in that language, you instead translate it to your native and doing the former gets harder and harder as you age/use the language more.

It's really nothing special, you just pick up the language of the people you live with through every day cultural osmosis

Btw the whole idea that it's 'easier' or 'better' to learn languages early has 'recently' been somewhat discredited. It doesn't seem to be entirely 'wrong' but the truth behind it is far from the simplistic way most understand it.

It can be a aspect to the speed to picking it up, how easily the language can be more 'deeply ingrained' into one's thoughts, etc, but there are many more variables that seem to be much more 'important' influences overall.
I can probably dig out a few of the papers on the subject, but I don't have them at hand or anything.
And obviously we are still fighting to understand so much of the brain and everything about it so who knows what we'll figure out in more time.

As for the argument about him learning the language. There have been valid points for both perspectives, but aside from those things already mentioned, it could just be something like a 'magic' reason he just can't actually learn it, even if he wanted to and everyone put effort in. Like a 'mistake' in the summon, or an inherent limitation, a 'curse' or something, etc. Yes, not exactly a 'satisfying' reason, but it's quick, easy, maintains the premise, and keeps the many possibilities of holes that could arise from some of the other explanations somewhat more limited.
Maybe this was already mentioned, I didn't go through all the earliest comments.

Partially depends on your defenition - I'm not at all confident on my hebrew(much to the displeasure of my grandfather), some german and I could say some really nasty things about your mother in Albanian or Croatian thanks to a bro of mine

Here's my theory:
From what we've seen he has only transported between worlds when he sleeps. So it could be that his soul is still tethered to his world and Mary used a spell to summon him to her world, but since his soul is "foreign" he will be pulled back out naturally if he is left alone which is why Mary sleeps with him. The witch sister found this out and inspecting him and told Mary hence why after their first encounter they sleep together. And now we see a stone introduced to help keep him anchored in their world.
