@obsidianpassion based upon old 1970s through early 1990s anime sci-fi, manga, and JRPGs, I'd water that a past generation got into space and they are using the planet as a "laboratory" of sorts. Though, it could also be space aliens amongst other things. In any event, I wager that whatever is killing folks (if it isn't just decompression from no atmosphere) is not only the Bigger-Bad, but also that when the truth is revealed that we may see several heel-faced-turns in the not too distant future.

I wonder how "Glasses McDouche" will respond to his unexpected defeat!

He may also pull a Magus from Chrono Trigger, which would be EPIC as he must admit to being played by another power—he'll ruthlessly seek to kill the Bigger-Bad. Once defeated he may go all "One-Winged Angel" or worse, but we'll have to wait around to see. =P
