This had a fun premise, a good starting hand among the few stories like it; but I can only ask why the story took this suddenly unfun, trying-too-hard-to-be-realistic direction.

As for the MC, I'm pretty sure he could just lawyer up like others have mentioned. Not only that but he could probably seek asylum and ask for help to get Chris-chan freed. Plenty of countries would help and probably treat them more humanly than any Japanese government from any era would.
