@Kaarme I live in a farming sort of area, one of my neighbors has cows and another had chickens until just recently they decided to move. There are definitely too many things out here that would probably go for a cat if you let them roam around outside on their own, I can't really say it's that great a place to have an outdoor cat. Foxes like you said, but also coyotes, bears, mountain lions, bobcats, fisher cats (actually weasels). Not to mention the possibilities of cars. The guys with the cows have some big ass vehicles going up and down that road frequently enough that it wouldn't be strange if your cat gets hit (we had one that liked to sleep in the middle of the road since it'd be warm there). Even the local deer or swarms of turkeys might be a threat to the cat, the deer will kick something to death if it makes them worry about its young and a swarm of turkeys has a whole lot of talons to swing around at a cat that gets too full of itself near them. Speaking of the deer, deer ticks man. So many fucking ticks out here, lyme disease isn't fun.
@Glomoro Yeah, it would depend on the surroundings. If the place isn't surrounded by total wilderness like woodlands, the larger beasts would be mostly absent, unless semi-urban foxes are a problem. I don't honestly remember the situation in this manga, but since it's Japan, chances are the place isn't terribly unsafe.
@Kaarme I think bears and boars might be the possibilities for the larger ones to look out for, could depend on the region of Japan too but I've seen some things about the more rural areas shrinking in human population and having more bear sightings as a result and the boars are sort of well known as pests for places growing produce like the farms in this series would be.
@Glomoro How far was the place from Tokyo, or other mega cities, anyway? While rural areas have been losing population, there's still a lot of farming going on in Japan to feed the population. Bears might be a problem, but I doubt a boar would be once the cat has grown up. A bear naturally has the troublesome ability to climb. A boar would be too clumsy to be of much danger, surely.
