The shadows seem to actually copy four of the most powerful personality traits of the human they are mimicking but they take like two and the other two are inverted. Kate copied Emily's intelligence and airhead tendency however she inverted Emily's optimism and extrovert tendencies. John copied Shaun's bullheadedness and tendency to observe but inverted his rationality and patience. I can't really say much about the other two because we haven't seen them as much

This ends up with the shadows being very different to the human since what they copy and invert is quite random
