I agree with you Fire Syndicate, but I think some of the money translators ask for in donations goes to server and site upkeep on their end. I know it was a bigger thing before mangadex (since each group wanted their own site and reader to upload chapters to) but I do know some groups like lhtranslation still mainly use their own site and server which isn’t always cheap to keep running.
Just wanted to put that out there since most donations definitely don’t go to the raws 100% of the time.

I do know that the light novel translation side of things is even worse nowadays in the whole “pay me for a chapter” concept. One group, Light novel Bastion, has a series “death mage doesnt want to die a fourth time” that they charge $200 per chapter. As in, they release a chapter of it once donations to that series have reached $200. Which is a pretty nasty business strategy for a single series.

Amen to the Translator's Note at the end! I'll never not roll my eyes at groups that try to profit off of illegally translating manga as if they somehow deserve it.\

Anyway, back to the manga... These TWO are not just cute, they're adorable! xD

@Danthefan I don't think there is that much of a difference between before and after mangadex. Before mangadex we had Batoto, and I guess in the months between Batoto announcing they were shutting down and Mangadex becoming popular, some scanlation sites may have decided to opt into that kind of thing. I'd say that if anything, it's more prevalent now because of the issue some scanlation groups had with MD some months ago.

Also, I feel like you're misrepresenting the Light Novel Bastion situation a bit. Light novel translations are a bit different from manga is that there is just so much more to translate. With manga, you don't need to translate the backgrounds, the character expressions, the action, etc. Yes there is cleaning and typesetting, but I don't think anybody would argue that on average it takes a lot more work to translate light novels. Also, Death Mage chapters are fairly long. He also doesn't release chapters when the donations hit 200, as he gets donations faster than he can translate. It's not as if he has an archive of translated chapters and throws one out when the donations are high enough. His work is also pretty high-quality, so if people want to donate for it, that's fine by me.

Even if a snipe has worse quality than the original, readers don't even notice it unless the quality is absolute SHIT. Like for instance, you see people defending steffortless and calling Fire Syndicate's version shit quality when steffortless' version actually has worse quality.

This has been mentioned before but scanlation is ILLEGAL. And technically the story (that's being scanlated) belongs to someone else. So taking money for it means ur making a profit off of someone else's work (even if the scanlators also put in work the series doesn't belong to them and making money off of it is shameless).

Preach that credit page. More people need to know how scanlation really work do they don’t get fooled by scanlators our to make a profit (some do honestly need the money and usually you’ll be able to distinguish them).

Not to mention, this is coming from Mangadex where scanlation groups are interactive with readers yet some users still don’t know much of the inner working. Imagine the number of those who don’t use this site. No doubt they think KM or whatever shady aggregators they’re using are providing the scanlation.
