I agree with you Fire Syndicate, but I think some of the money translators ask for in donations goes to server and site upkeep on their end. I know it was a bigger thing before mangadex (since each group wanted their own site and reader to upload chapters to) but I do know some groups like lhtranslation still mainly use their own site and server which isn’t always cheap to keep running.
Just wanted to put that out there since most donations definitely don’t go to the raws 100% of the time.
I do know that the light novel translation side of things is even worse nowadays in the whole “pay me for a chapter” concept. One group, Light novel Bastion, has a series “death mage doesnt want to die a fourth time” that they charge $200 per chapter. As in, they release a chapter of it once donations to that series have reached $200. Which is a pretty nasty business strategy for a single series.
