Note that He is the most powerful hero alive. If they wanted help they could have said it.
Betrayal is Betrayal and betraying the most powerful hero that loved you is something far more terrifying if he lives after that betrayal.
I want him to kill them all. I want them all to die. That's how I want him to deal with those who betray him. More fitting since he could have died after all.

Well a) They were unable to harm him physically, unless after they had bound his powers, and at that time the other heroes arrived. But frankly, promising love and then betraying him like that is way worse than any physical punishment, unless it would be permanently crippling him
b) They're probably controlled in some way, they don't think the MC is able to help them with, be it magical contracts, holding their family hostage, family needing expensive care or whatnot.
c) If that last monster was any indication, what you should be paying attention to, is how many times he's likely saved their lives during their 3 years together. And then they betray him according to their plan. If they can have a somewhat normal mind afterwards, they've either gotten over it, decided to help their mind stay healthy other ways, been thoroughly happy that their family is safe (if that's how they were controlled), or simply tried to forget it. The only real ways of being sure is their reaction when they meet again, but I can bet one thing they'll mention is him being too naive to actually make progress, in order to claim them being 'righteous' , maybe even claiming that if he died, another better hero of darkness would've arisen, and they would've repaid their betrayal by helping them.
