tl;dr:
Imagine MangaDex, but run by a single dude (plus mods) with another dude providing a couple of additional servers, entirely unoptimized, with a hacked forum engine to host scans and no API.
There was no size limit, so you could find chapters 150MB+ size because QUALITY IS IMPORTANT.
Because reading mongo online is too difficult, some people made their own bots for it that would request hundreds of mangoes all at once. Servers died.
And every single aggregator relied on it for content with their own bots. Servers died some more.
So, the dude said fuck it and closed the shop. But at least their catalog got salvaged and then ported to MD.

Application programming interface. In case of MangaDex, apps like Tachiyomi can request only necessary data like this. One request that results with everything necessary in just 68.36KB of data, versus 52+ requests and 1.52MB if the usual page was crawled without caching, and it's still has missing data.
