How much do you guys wanna bet that the whole "disposed fiancée" thing was just a plot cooked by the noble families to force the guy to marry into nobility and forget about his old flame. Hell, I can even bet the MC will find out about this later on and have some kind of existential crisis.

Lied? it's not a backstory. It's more like a starting point of the story. it was probably part of the plot for her not to meet him making her feel abandoned. we are only reading her point of view after all.
The way it was setup was too suspicious.
There must be more to the story than just her being abandoned.
