Yea, just claim they are cousins. With the "We are kind of like childhood friends" response from earlier, that would be the most logical route.
Also opens opportunities to escape further questioning from the cunning beauty. She already claimed they use the same shampoo, next will be "seem to come from the same direction", and eventually, "You live together!".
If its a cousin, wouldnt be odd for them to live together (its not uncommon for the parents to tour Japan/the world once the children are old enough to take care of themselves). Extra points if he claims both of their parents approved of the relationship and allowed her to move in with him.

That would move all relationship issues to the parents, neighbors, school staff, and actual childhood friends.
