Shion dies along with many children. The only way Rimuru can save them is by becoming a demon lord. To do this he needs many human souls, so he slaughters the army advancing on Tempest. They are advancing because they think Hinata has killed Rimuru, he loses the fight but barely cheats death. Upon becoming a Demon Lord he revives Shion, and Great Sage also evolves allowing him to break the Unlimited Prison holding Veldora and frees him

That's only a brief summary plenty more happens

Birth of the Demon Lord Arc:

Blood Shadows a group from the church. Iirc they were ordered to massacre tempest citizens. Hinata fights Rimuru on his way to Tempest, manages to retreat. The retarded Kingdom of Farmas marches to Tempest in a so called Subjugation/Invasion with aid from the church. Rimuru finds out that it's possible to resurrect Shion and the others if Rimuru completes Harvest Festival (kill/harvest 10,000 souls) to become demon lord. Since Farmas invasion Rimuru takes the chance to massacre all of them also summons Arch Demon which later is named Diablo(Epic moment) completes the Harvest Festival and becomes Demon lord. Rimurur then resurrects Shion and others and evolves them to Fair Oni and Dark evil Oni. Veldora is Released inside Rimuru (Yay).

the anime actually have 3 episode left but unfortunately main story will end with next week and other 2 are anime only extra also 1 more ova bundle with a book i think.
so i'm guessing they will end around this chapter.

Another Conference held with Dwarf Kingdom and Human Countries this time with Brumund kingdom, Sorceress Dynasty on Alliance and Cooperation.Fairy Queen tells/warns Rimuru about Walpurgis Banquet. Claymans plan to destroy Tempest was exposed by the help of Milim, Nova, Frey and Karion (Clayman Ordered Milim to kill Karoin)(Milim all part of her plan spared Karion). IIrc he thought he mind controlled Milim but it didn't effect her at all and was pretending the entire time (I could be wrong). Rimuru accepted into the demon circle granted domain of Jura forest. Rimuru renamed the demon lords to Eight Star Demon Lords.

yeah with the delayed ova, the character you mentioned, good sales numbers, and the late announcement of their plan for ep 24, 25 rather then rushed ending point after the next arc.
chances of season 2 being announced seem decent
