You should consider the lack of rights and opportunities or legal protections woman had to reject a man's advances including her husband
rape is still rape, violence is still violence regardless of the time period. Just because violence against woman laws didn't exist [and they didn't start until about 19th century] Just like with western slavery, violence against other human beings being legal is still violent the time period doesn't change anything except if the state protects perpetrators of it or not.
