@Tcof It's not a culture thing. In the west a man traditionally has been expected to take the lead too. But girls confess just as often as boys.

The girl in this manga was just too shy to confess, just like the boy. But if he wasn't going to do it then maybe she should have done something about it, rather than just agreeing to marry someone else.

@Need2Bookmark still a culture thing, really. while both have that familiar, not in the same degree. Even now, a lot of Asian still very old fashion. For what i know, Japan is one of a extremely old fashion at that. Love is one thing, marriage is another.
"the girl is just too shy to confess" , this really not the case, How the guy act could see as extreem, manga-ish, but what the girl did could see as the norm (of course you know, i don't mean this action

). Even in relationship, the girl would wait for the man to propose. when you take marriage in the account, if they are not suitable, they could not be together. In the west, you marriage by the couple is enough, in Asian while it is legal to do as well, No one did that. You need family. It is tradition and even ceremony, that the man will come to the girl family to say a hello, get approve, engagement etc... or just ask to going out with the girl.
And they in that age, if is not just love between the young anymore. the "marry the man arranged for me tomorrow" may just her try to make a push. But just as i said, he can not even bring himself to confess all this years, then even with after this and he is not. yeah the girl should question should she find a different man to marry for real. How could any girl could believe a man with such a gut could be a lead of the family
