... Why is the hull of the spaceship so weak, as to be broken (like that) with only one blast? Were they relying on the forcefield too much? Don't they get exhausted in most stories though? Then there's also the on & off, to save power, and the like.

Speaking of, wonder why they didn't die from the hull being broken. self-containment/repair?
