He's technically just one year off of being considered a legal adult, so let them go for it.

On one hand I really like having an older MC and I have wanted to read a story where the woman is older than the man. But that age gap is huge, that's twelve years more than my parents. Does their pass life also count?
I do like that she is being conscious of said age gap. And if they wait until he's a proper adult age, I would not really mind.

Few things about this premise:
1- 17 yo are not children. Even more in Japan.
2- 17 yo is not the age of a children of someone that is 40 yo as it would imply that he was conceived when she was 13 yo. Given that the avarage age of first time mothers world wide is 16 that claim makes no sense.
