makes me think of how, when in regions, they substitute different words, but you lose the rarity of it if you have to explain it. I think your decision was the right one to make

@starburst98 yeah I really dislike what the translator did there personally, because Kansai dialect is not the same as just having a southern American accent, it's really a different dialect, and nothing short of using a different English dialect (think something like AAVE) would come close to it. Adapting it like an accent conveys it differently and makes you perceive the character differently too due to the cultural perception the accent has.

And because to use a different dialect one must be very familiar with it, I do not feel comfortable venturing into that territory, especially without a proofreader/editor to make sure I'm doing it right and it flows well.

I am of course fully aware that not adapting the dialect also changes the character, but I fully believe it does so to a lesser degree because of how standard English doesn't have such a different perception. I would rather take that loss than misconstrue the character into something they're not.

It is not physically impossible to translate a dialect like kansai of course, I just don't believe I have the skills necessary to do it justice, and I would rather accept that shortcoming than try to venture into something I don't believe will work.

Indeed, but that manga is all about the difference, so without even an accent it would become confusing because she is not talking strangely at all, which is the source of most of the jokes.

@starburst98 of course I realize that in that manga specifically your hand is picked for you from the start, so you have to do something or the entire premise completely falls apart, but it really doesn't read right the way that scanlator did it if you know what Kansai dialect is supposed to be like, which would always bother me personally and is why I would never touch a manga like that if I knew I couldn't do it justice. But not all translators are the same and I know most fan translators barely even think about these topics, so what can you do.

For me personally, I have to pick my battles, and if I know I can't do it right I'm not going to half ass it.

@Nosebleed: Well a safe option would be to give her dialogue a different font, it would at lead make it clear she's speaking differently to other characters.

@Tamerlane As far as I'm aware, the main stereotypes associated with Kansai dialect are directness, free-spiritedness, friendliness, and humour. They're often contrasted with people from Kantou (the region around Tokyo), who are seen as colder, more serious, and less social.
