I think it is implied that the two events are connected - after grandma-Hina died, Sadao probably wasn't able to come and visit cat-Sakuya at the shrine for quite a while.
Seems like Sadao's life took a nosedive in general after that, considering his current state.
Sakuya didn't know any of that, so from her point of view it appeared as if Sadao abandoned her.
